YD3 is an innovative platform dedicated to empowering student-athletes through the transformative experience of Division III athletics. Division III has long been misunderstood as a “backup option” to Division I, despite its unique ability to balance competitive athletics with academic excellence and personal growth. Taillight partnered with YD3 to overcome this perception, creating a dynamic brand strategy and identity system that reframes Division III as the ultimate pathway to holistic success.

At the heart of our work was the challenge of articulating D3’s distinct value while positioning YD3 as the authoritative voice in the space. Through deep research, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning, we developed a brand framework rooted in five key pillars: Holistic Guides, Balance as an Ideal, Community Makers, Ambition Builders, and Category Creators. These pillars became the foundation for a visual identity and messaging strategy designed to resonate with students, parents, coaches, and alumni.

One of our key breakthroughs was the creation of the positioning “Play. Learn. Thrive.” which highlight the integration of athletic competition, intellectual development, and personal flourishing. Alongside these, we developed a flexible design system that blends athletic dynamism with academic sophistication, appealing to YD3’s diverse audiences.

YD3 now stands as a beacon for students and families seeking balance and long-term success. The brand transformation not only repositions Division III athletics but also establishes YD3 as a first-to-world platform that empowers scholar-athletes from recruitment through graduation and into their early careers.

This project has sparked a paradigm shift in how D3 is perceived, redefining it as the “best-kept secret” in collegiate sports and inspiring thousands of students to pursue a path that combines their passions with their ambitions.
