“The Immortal’s Palm” is a 3D-animated sci-fi short that portrays a future scientific quest to forge metaphysical connections with alien life through ancient cacti.

In 2055, on a remote island abundant with cacti, a team of scientists produces gummies derived from cactus to enhance human resilience in extreme climates. Surprisingly, during an interview, four participants report experiencing a connection with the cosmos and extraterrestrial life. This unforeseen discovery redirects the scientists to a new experimental path, creating various hybrid entities of humans and cacti to elevate human spirituality and challenge the boundaries of science once again. During a solar eclipse, the participants gather at the center of the island, attempting to perceive the cosmic energy permeating the air…

This animated short juxtaposes science with mysticism, proposing a potential intersection between the two. It explores the tension between rationality and insanity, the measurable and the ineffable. The narrative reexamines the essence of progression and questions the ultimate reach of science. Who translates science for us? How do we reconcile our rationality? Is it ever possible to create a shared, spiritually vibrant future, and what sacrifices might this entail?

This work was created for the City Sci-fi Fall 2023 course, under the guidance of the City Science Group at MIT Media Lab. The production utilized a comprehensive suite of professional software, including Maya, Zbrush, Substance 3D Painter, Adobe Audition, ElevenLabs, and Final Cut Pro. In crafting this experimental sci-fi short, we sought to merge imaginative, unconventional storytelling with playful yet detailed visuals that convey rich information. The film concludes with an intentionally open ending, inviting viewers to interpret whether the test subjects truly established contact with extraterrestrial life based on their own perspectives regarding the intersection of science and mysticism. This approach encourages broader dialogue and deeper reflection on the various possible paths of human discovery and understanding.
