It’s the next frontier — and our world’s next giant leap. Boilermakers are not afraid to go first. Purdue University’s influence on the U.S. space program has been greater than that of nearly any other nonmilitary institution. From the first moon walk to the latest commercial spaceflights, Boilermakers have led the way. Designated as the “Cradle of Astronauts” because of the 27 alumni who have conducted research in space, Purdue is responsible for training record-breaking legends like Neil Armstrong and Virgil “Gus” Grissom as well as today’s International Space Station specialists and upcoming innovators. To inspire the next generation about exciting opportunities in space, Purdue Brand Studio produced “Boilers to Mars.” The short film was strategically created to meet a young target audience on YouTube, their platform of choice and one underutilized by higher education. Space exploration is responsible for increasing scientific discoveries and technological advancements that directly impact Earth — from identifying new resources to strengthening satellite communication. Research will eventually lead us to another planet. The remaining question: What will it take to go first? “Boilers to Mars” shows what’s possible when we propel from an education centered on innovation and persistence. Bringing humankind to Mars will take diverse skill sets that span industries. As an instigator of progress and a place for adventurers, scientists, dreamers and doers, the university is uniquely positioned to prepare people for the challenge. Each character in “Boilers to Mars” was inspired by actual students and real stories. The crew meets while pursuing their degrees and works with one another in their careers after graduation. They represent how leaders in STEM provide needed solutions in agriculture, engineering, flight technology and public policy. Together the members experience space exploration like never before and lead the way to what’s next.
