Tokyo, Japan’s vibrant capital, is a sprawling metropolis known for blending traditional culture and cutting-edge modernity. Within this vast urban landscape lies Central Tokyo, encompassing three key districts, including Chūō. Historically significant, Chūō serves as a central hub for commerce and governance, reflecting various perspectives on urban development in Japan. Nihonbashi, an integral part of the Chūō district, has long been recognized as Tokyo’s economic center, playing a vital role in the city’s commercial activities since the Edo period.
The new design for the district in Nihonbashi, Japan, seeks to revitalize this historic commercial center by envisioning higher density and creating a more balanced ratio between living and working spaces, ultimately fostering a vibrant and cohesive community. This research involved comprehensive groundwork, including site visits to gather relevant data, analyzing current issues, and employing Rhino as a 3D modeling tool to create new buildings massing and redesigning the surrounding areas, incorporating greenery and improved street layouts.
The rainwater management system is designed to harmonize functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics, creating a seamless integration between the built environment and the natural landscape. Drawing inspiration from the site’s natural contours, a retention pond is strategically placed to serve as a reservoir for collected rainwater, providing a sustainable and efficient water source for irrigation. The system captures rainwater from street gutters, building slopes, and surface runoff, directing it into the pond through a network of carefully designed channels. A state-of-the-art filtration system ensures the water is clean and free from contaminants before it is stored, promoting eco-friendly principles while maintaining water quality. The pond becomes a dynamic feature within the landscape, blending form and function while supporting biodiversity and contributing to the overall environmental health of the site. This rainwater management approach is a thoughtful expression of environmental stewardship, enhancing the site both in terms of ecological value and visual appeal.
