The Bartholomew County Public Library had a vision: transform a dated and underutilized space into a vibrant hub for creativity, learning, and belonging. But realizing that vision required more than a renovation—it required redefining what a library could be in the hearts and minds of its community. The project needed a name, identity, and brand story that would honor the library’s legacy while inviting new audiences to engage with the space in bold, imaginative ways.
Through in-depth research—including stakeholder interviews, audience surveys, and on-site immersion—we uncovered a powerful narrative hiding in plain sight. This wasn’t just about books or programming. It was about possibility. The community wasn’t looking for another meeting room or maker space. They were craving a place to gather, explore, express themselves, and feel at home. The brand needed to signal something fresh, something future-facing, but still rooted in the spirit of the library.
We began by naming the space The LEX: A Library of Experience—a word rooted in the library’s original mission, but reimagined here as a symbol of limitless expression. From there, we crafted a full verbal and visual identity that reflects curiosity, connection, and creativity. Every element—from the logo system to the tone of voice—was shaped by the brand’s narrative: a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to explore what’s possible. The branding process didn’t just give The LEX a look; it gave the space a story the community could see themselves in.
The LEX officially opened its doors in April 2025 to widespread excitement and community support. The brand launch generated strong engagement on social media and positioned the space as a centerpiece of Bartholomew County’s cultural and civic life. More importantly, The LEX has become what it set out to be: a living, breathing part of the community where learning isn’t confined to shelves, and creativity has room to thrive.
