The Mazu Pilgrimage in Taiwan is celebrated annually as one of the world’s three largest religious events, alongside the Vatican’s Christmas Mass and the Muslim Hajj to Mecca. Honored by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this extraordinary pilgrimage is not only a profound spiritual tradition but also one of Taiwan’s most iconic and globally recognized cultural celebrations.
Building on this rich cultural legacy, the Beyond Space team partnered with the acclaimed SET TV production group to elevate the Mazu Pilgrimage with state-of-the-art broadcast technology. By integrating live virtual production into Taiwan’s most celebrated religious event, the team redefined the possibilities of live coverage -merging tradition with innovation to deliver an unprecedented viewing experience.
The live stream ran continuously from morning until night, capturing the pilgrimage’s journey from Jenn Lann Temple to the Dajia River Bridge. The Augmented Reality (AR) system achieved long-distance, real-time positioning across several kilometers, covering more than five key attractions and virtually spanning over 10 kilometers, nearly half of Dajia Township - a remarkable feat for any virtual production team. This groundbreaking AR broadcast marked a milestone in virtual production, astonishing online audiences with a rich layer of digital storytelling. Viewers were immersed in a dynamic experience where AR advertisements and virtual objects were seamlessly integrated into the landscape, transforming the entire town into an interactive, real-time virtual stage.
Most notably, this project made history as the first among the world’s top three religious events to feature live aerial drone footage seamlessly combined with real-time AR effects. The broadcast drew an impressive audience and received widespread acclaim, setting a new benchmark for immersive cultural storytelling powered by cutting-edge technology.
This marriage of traditional Taiwanese religious activities with modern AR technology exemplifies how innovation can breathe new life into age-old traditions, making them more accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences while maintaining their core values and significance.
