Ascent captures a personal journey from Savannah, Georgia to New York City. It reflects the contrast between two places, the calm, historic rhythm of a Southern town and the fast-paced energy of a global metropolis. Through animation, typography, and visual metaphor, the project tells a story of movement, growth, and transition.
The visuals draw inspiration from the distinct character of each city, with Savannah’s graceful grid of tree-lined squares, draped in Spanish moss, reflected in gentle forms and elegant typography. In contrast, New York is portrayed through towering skylines, fire escapes, yellow cabs, subways, and bold sans serif lettering inspired by tile signs in the station. A suitcase becomes the central metaphor, filled with memories, icons, and hybrid motifs that merge both worlds, while the car stickers express the idea of relocation.
The New York scenes highlight the city’s vertical scale and dense architecture. Every design choice, from color palettes to typographic styles, was made to reflect the emotional shifts and environmental contrasts of this life chapter. At its core, Ascent is about embracing a new life. It is a visual record of what it feels like to leave the familiar behind, step into the unknown, and find where you belong in a new city.
