In creating the title sequence for the documentary, Witness to War, the primary challenge was trying to source footage of the film’s subject, an Englishman named George Hogg, who was instrumental in helping Chinese citizens during WWII. Having only been able to acquire a few still images of the subject, there was a distinct shortage of relevant material. Fortunately I was able to source some rare Sino-Japanese War footage, scan some original typed documents from the era, and create AI-generated video to depict George Hogg’s experience in China.
The result is a 25-second blended montage, a mixture of animated stills, actual footage, scanned documents, and AI, all edited together with dramatic music to capture the struggle and bravery of this man’s short life. The title sequence serves to set the broader tone for the documentary – an attempt to shed light on just one of WWII’s many forgotten heroes.
All work was made in-house with no budget allocated.
