Portlantis is a new experience centre located on the Tweede Maasvlakte that brings the scale, complexity, and urgency of the Port of Rotterdam to life. Designed by Kossmanndejong in close collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam, MVRDV (architecture), and Piet Harm Sterk (art direction), the exhibitions form a fully integrated experience where content, architecture, and spatial design are inseparable.
The building itself is an icon. Five identical volumes are stacked and rotated like shipping containers. Each floor features panoramic views of the surrounding North Sea, coastline, and working port, making the real-world environment an active part of the experience. At its heart, a 22 metre high atrium connects all levels. A kinetic installation and interactive port model animate the space, giving form to the pulse and energy of the port.
The exhibition invites visitors into the world of the port as it is today, showing how it functions on a day-to-day basis. It then expands the view to show the port’s broader significance in global trade and environmental impact. Finally, it looks ahead to the future, offering insights into innovation, sustainability, and the transitions shaping what comes next. Rather than following a fixed route, visitors explore freely, guided by their own curiosity.
Interactive installations and layered storytelling create an experience that is both intuitive and deep. Playful elements engage younger audiences and first-time visitors, while rich data and in-depth content support professionals and returning guests. Every visitor finds a personal point of connection.
Design choices translate abstract systems into physical, sensory experiences. Films unfold across sculptural walls. Scenographic details reflect the language of cranes, cargo, and flow. A red external staircase leads to a rooftop viewing platform, extending the experience into the landscape itself.
Portlantis is not just a museum. It is a public space where knowledge, imagination, and connection come together. It does not just explain the port. It lets you feel it—and see your place within it.
