Food Dice is a mobile application concept designed to resolve everyday indecision about what to eat. Many users hesitate between recipes or restaurants, which leads to frustration and wasted time. Food Dice simplifies this process by turning decision-making into a guided, interactive experience. It presents randomized but context-aware suggestions—helping users make faster choices when they feel uncertain or overwhelmed.
Food Dice offers two core decision modes: (1) a random nearby restaurant, and (2) a recipe matched to ingredients the user already has. For restaurant options, the system connects directly to major food delivery platforms, allowing users to complete orders without switching apps.
For cooking at home, users can input available ingredients by scanning grocery receipts, taking photos of food items, or entering them manually. Food Dice uses barcode lookup and image recognition to identify items, then filters matching recipes based on what the user has. Personal preferences—dietary restrictions, liked ingredients, cuisine types, effort tolerance, and spice level—are stored and applied automatically to ensure relevance.
The core interaction is a digital “dice roll.” When tapped, the dice triggers the system to generate one suggestion. Three rolls are allowed for each decision-making attempt, to avoid user cognitive overload and decision-making time. The roll is not purely random—it runs through weighted filtering logic based on user preferences and real-time context. For example, a cold evening might surface a hot noodle soup from a nearby restaurant. A lazy mood might yield a 10-minute snack recipe using ingredients already on hand. If the result doesn’t appeal to the user, they can re-roll to receive another tailored suggestion.
The project followed a user-centered design process. I conducted user research to surface pain points in everyday meal decisions, developed personas, and mapped decision journeys to identify opportunity spaces. These findings shaped the app’s structure, logic, and visual layout. The prototype moved from wireframes to a high-fidelity interface that communicates the full experience.
Food Dice combines automation, personalization, and minimal input. It reduces decision fatigue without removing control. The system turns a common daily dilemma into a streamlined, engaging interaction.
