About The Entry
"Youth Soul Lab" stands as a testament to the transformative power of adaptive reuse and social innovation. Located in Chiayi City, Taiwan, this youth hub breathes new life into a historic building—originally a brick kiln factory, later converted into a homeless shelter, and subsequently abandoned. Today, this once-dilapidated structure has undergone a magnificent transformation, becoming the city’s premier "Third Place"—a multifunctional venue where the younger generation can anchor their dreams and reconnect with their hometown.
Facing the dual challenges of an aging population and youth outflow, the Chiayi City Government launched the "Youth Soul Lab" initiative. This project goes beyond mere building renovation; it initiates the reconstruction of a youth community. Moving away from traditional spatial design thinking, it introduces a content strategy centered on "Civic Empowerment." By preserving historical textures within the physical space and combining them with an open, flexible layout, the building becomes an immersive interactive stage. It invites young people to step out of their online digital echo chambers and engage in physical, offline co-creation activities—encompassing everything from digital fabrication workshops and live podcasts to experimental music festivals and curated creative markets.
The operational strategy is built upon three dimensions. First, through a focus on "Public Affairs," it guides youth to explore their local cultural roots. Second, through "Digital Empowerment," it equips them with modern digital skills. Finally, through "Disruptive Action," it encourages bold experimentation, thereby transforming the lab into a true incubator for social impact. This is a safe space that allows for trial and error, enabling young creators to translate abstract creativity into concrete social action.
By transforming a site that once symbolized displacement into a base for belonging, Youth Soul Lab redefines the relationship between the city and its youth. It is no longer just a government facility, but a living ecosystem connecting policy, industry, and creativity. This project successfully demonstrates how strategic programming and immersive spatial experiences can converge to solve urban issues, flipping a historical void into a beacon of hope for the region's future.
