A Gift to Others Is a Gift to Yourself

Almost two years ago, BKFoxx painted a serene water lily mural in the halls of the oncology unit in honor of her late father. Before his passing, he spent four months on the sixth floor, while BK and her family spent much of that time alongside our care team, forming meaningful bonds with those who cared for him.
This video came to life when BK returned to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, commissioned to create a new mural for a newly designed resting area. Beyond highlighting her beautiful work, we wanted to hear from BK about what it felt like to be back, and what it meant to create something new in a space so deeply connected to her family’s journey.
BK shared how emotionally difficult it was to return after her father’s passing to paint the first mural. Coming back this time felt different. While still deeply meaningful, she described painting the second mural as healing, an experience that offered comfort and reflection rather than pain.
Her story is a reminder of the quiet power of art in healthcare spaces. When you can change an environment, especially during moments of vulnerability, it can bring peace, connection, and hope when it’s needed most.
