This project was driven by a tragic fatality and a subsequent safety grant dedicated to preventing future accidents. Our task was to create an experience that cultivates an immediate respect for CNC lathes and a visceral understanding of the consequences. We needed to give each learner a "core memory" that intimately and immediately demonstrates the severity of an accident without relying on gore, bridging the gap between a classroom manual and the high-stakes reality of the shop floor.
At the heart of the experience is the "Consequence Loop." While standard training simply resets after an error, this simulation uses psychological "jump scares" at critical failure points identified by veteran instructors. We leveraged the science of high-arousal learning, where a startled response triggers deeper memory encoding. By integrating these moments into the core operational flow, we force learners to confront the immediate results of a safety breach. This moves safety from a set of rules to a lived experience, even tracking the learner’s own hand movements in VR and using high-impact realism to foster emotional respect for the machine’s power.
To ensure immersion, our team conducted an on-site audit to capture 3D spatial audio and high-fidelity visual references of live lathe operations. We used an audio-driven narrative with AI-generated voice, SFX reactions, and spatial sound design to communicate the gravity of an injury. Focusing on haptic feedback and auditory cues rather than visual blood allowed us to maintain professional standards while keeping the psychological impact profound. We also developed a parallel desktop version, reconfiguring the VR experience for a mouse-and-keyboard experience to ensure this life-saving training reached every student, regardless of their hardware.
The "Machinist Jump Scare" turned a clinical safety checklist into a memorable experience. By providing a safe space to make "lethal" mistakes, we empowered students to build a safety-first intuition. This project honors a tragic legacy by ensuring every student who approaches these lathes possesses the visceral respect required to stay safe.
