About The Entry

Problem:
Hachioji, a trading city of Tokyo that flourished in the Edo period through sake production and geisha culture. Yet under rapid urbanization, that culture was quietly disappearing. In 2023, Tokyo Hachioji Craft Sake Brewery was founded to revive it — built inside a renovated Edo-period ryotei still standing in the heart of town, the very space where geishas once danced. As a new brand, it sought an identity built on regional regeneration and a contemporary redefinition of that culture.
Challenge:
The visual language of sake tends to fall into worn nostalgia — rural fields, the craftsmanship of large-scale breweries. Yet this brand's essence lies elsewhere: in the pioneering business model of converting a former urban ryotei into a microbrewery, and in its fusion with the local culture. That originality and spirit of challenge had to be made visible.
Solution:
The geisha who refines each gesture. The brewer who refines each batch. We discovered the DNA shared by both cultures — Pride — and named it "Tokyo Pride." Through color reminiscent of a metropolis in neon, and by proposing a wine glass — where aroma, not only taste, becomes part of the experience — in place of the traditional sake cup, we dismantled the stereotypical imagery of tradition. The copy was structured as a question posed from the geisha, who embodies the culture, to the brewer, who embodies its future. In pursuit of authenticity, we cast a real working geisha and the actual package as our subjects, presenting a visual narrative in which Pride, its most human face, is distilled into a single vessel: the sake itself.
Results:
The work ran through a deliberately narrow set of touchpoints — a local traditional-arts event and regional micro-media in Hachioji — favoring high-density engagement with a culturally aligned audience over broad reach. Within the placement area, the identity of Tokyo Hachioji Brewery took hold, and the work drew new attention to geisha culture. Two traditions came to elevate each other's value.
