About The Entry
The 2026 Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival redefines how traditional Chinese orchestral music is experienced by transforming a conventional music festival into an immersive cultural experience that integrates performance, visual identity, public engagement, and city branding.
Now in its 16th edition, the festival has evolved into one of Taiwan's premier Chinese Music festivals, attracting more than 20,000 visitors annually. The 2026 program centered on the concept of bridging heritage and innovation, presenting both iconic orchestral classics and contemporary compositions through collaborations among the Hsinchu Youth Chinese Orchestra, the Tainan Chinese Orchestra, and internationally renowned guest artist Tian Ding, Principal Suona of the Macao Chinese Orchestra.
The design strategy focused on making traditional music relevant and approachable for modern audiences. Every touchpoint—from the festival identity and stage presentation to program curation and audience interaction—was designed to create an engaging journey that appeals to both dedicated music lovers and first-time attendees. Rather than preserving tradition as a museum artifact, the festival presents Chinese orchestral music as a living cultural language with contemporary relevance.
Beyond artistic excellence, the festival strengthens cultural sustainability by nurturing young musicians, encouraging intercity and international collaboration, and expanding public participation. It also reinforces Hsinchu's identity as a city where technological innovation and cultural creativity coexist, demonstrating how performing arts can contribute to urban identity and civic pride.
By combining thoughtful experience design, cultural storytelling, and outstanding musical programming, the 2026 Hsinchu Chinese Orchestra Festival transforms heritage into an inspiring public experience. The project demonstrates how design can preserve tradition while creating meaningful cultural connections for contemporary audiences, establishing a sustainable model for the future of traditional performing arts.
