The Litter Letter Project is a self generated project I created based on my personal response to the environmental issue of litter. As a designer and educator with a deep love of 3D typography, I created a series of prototypes to test the idea of using the litter as the message. Following several community workshops and sharing this idea with a wider audience I was awarded a grant several years ago and created 7 large scale 3D words in Louisiana that spelled words such as PRIDE, RESPECT, CARE and THINK. By displaying these large scale visual messages (up tp 8ft. tall) in public places the hope is to provoke response, thought and action. Over the last 5 years I have worked with many community organizations and local groups to help them create their own version of the project in their locations where there are litter issues or a need to promote recycling. To date litter letters have been built in cities and towns across the United States (LOUISIANA, TENNESSEE, ARIZONA, IOWA, PENNSYLVANIA, NEBRASKA, ALABAMA, MARYLAND, INDIANA, CALIFORNIA, COLORADO, WASHINGTON DC, FLORIDA) and overseas in The PHILIPPINES, ENGLAND, IRELAND, AUSTRALIA and NIGERIA. The Litter Letter Project is a way to begin the conversation and has bought people together in their community to use design as a tool to generate positive social change.
