Deploy in Shoushan: Exhibition in Sizihwan Bay Tunnel

Curated based on the concept of “dispositif”, this exhibition is held inside an air-raid shelter complex right next to the Sizihwan Bay Tunnel with a view to reviewing the historical development, transitions of political regimes, and changes in spatial and strategic deployments of Kaohsiung. By combining artistic imagination and design and juxtaposing folklore legend and reality, this exhibition is also intended to expose the historical heterogeneity and pluralism of the air-raid shelter complex that resonate with its functions. In this exhibition, different contexts are represented in the form of immersive theater with the simulation of a war command center office, interactive art installations, air-raid alarms for evacuation, and ready-mades such as water buckets and sand bags to simulate wartime deployments. In addition, three-stage color temperature lighting is used to guide viewers in their moving around inside the complicated network of humid and hot tunnels to perceive different spaces through their multiple physical senses. By combining artistic creation/design and the history/functions of the shelter, this exhibition can promote viewers’ imagination about wars and other disasters, whether natural or manmade ones, bring them more physical experiences of taking shelter during a disaster, and connect such experiences with the threats of disasters in reality in Taiwan. Through this exhibition, viewer can be inspired to not only think and appreciate the importance of having preparation for wars and other disasters in advance but also learn correct knowledge about evacuation for safety during a disaster.
