As one of the world’s leading medical schools, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine has a bold vision: to transform health for everyone. When we say “for everyone” we mean it – regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic status. This is our contract with society in action: placing patients, families and communities at the centre of everything we do.
This is a deliberately ambitious vision, but one that we’re delivering on thanks to an inspirational community of more than 16,000 faculty, staff and students spread out over a rugged and richly diverse province. We knew we needed to tell the story of our vision – to recognize the contributions of our people, to engage and inspire them – and to be successful we couldn’t rely on traditional academic marketing and communications. We would need to challenge ourselves to take an innovative approach to storytelling that would stand out in a crowded field and connect with the hearts and minds of our audience.
With our short film, Vision: Transforming Health for Everyone, we did just that.
Taking inspiration from our Faculty of Medicine Dean & VP, Health at UBC, we crafted a compelling universal story on film that demonstrates our vision in action. We left the traditional boundaries of academia behind and departed on a fantastic adventure around our province to film just a few of our amazing people where they live, work and play – all nominated by their peers as examples of those who truly embrace and exemplify our vision through their work. In the process, our team travelled thousands of kilometers through all four seasons, from the dynamic urban core of Vancouver, to the peaceful rivers of Vancouver Island, to a breathtakingly beautiful Northern Indigenous community, and everywhere else in between.
The result? An original and visually-arresting film that stands out in the landscape of academia and that speaks to the heart of our culture at the Faculty of Medicine: transformative, passionate, and driven by a collective desire for a more equitable, healthier world for all people.
