The Whale Theater is a static exhibition in the Tainan City Zuojhen Fossil Park, and it is an extended project from a piece of woodcut called “The Death of Sperm Whale” by artist LIN CHUNG-YUNG who approaches art and creation from an ecological and environmental viewpoint and particularly lays emphasis on property justice.
We referred to the “Death of Sperm Whale”, and created Immersive animation videos of a real stranded incident that happened to a sperm whale called Da-Bao.
In the animation, Da-Bao swims easefully, reaches to the water surface to breathe, and feeds on giant squids in the ocean as his daily life. However, as time goes by, the ocean is gradually filled up with all kinds of trash including plastics, and Da-Bao feeds on these plastics which are seen as giant squids due to his poor eyesight. Eventually, Da-Bao strands and closes his eyes forever.
In the end, Da-Bao turns into lighting stars, and the stars lead the audience to see the artwork.
When audiences enter the theater, there will bubble floating around their feet.
The bubbles are a symbol of hope. A hope to protect the ocean that will carry generation by generation.
Be aware! You will also see Da-Bao swimming over under your feet.
