For its new release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus on the Nintendo Switch, the marketing team of The Pokémon International Company had the idea of a commercial campaign that places Pokémon puppets at the center of reality TV scenarios. The ads border between absurdity and physical comedy, that transports viewers back to the days of ’90s gaming commercials. The puppet-styled Pokémon represented an approach to physical comedy that employed a certain 'camp style' which was relied on heavily.
The full campaign featured five spots, which spread across all social media platforms including promoted posts, and were translated into four other languages. Ultimately, the pieces created millions of social media impressions, leading to Pokémon Legends: Arceus selling 6.5 million copies globally in its first week of release, and becoming one of the top selling Nintendo Switch games of all time.
