With the purpose of contributing to the growth and transformation of the tourism industry, which is one of the most significant industries open to development in the Turkish economy, in accordance with the principles of sustainability, Enerjisa Enerji initiated its collaboration with Sabancı University and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The goal of the project, which is called the Center for Tourism Practices Based on Sustainable Energy (SENTRUM), is to create a transformation journey in Küçükköy, Ayvalık sub-province in Balıkesir province. In order for tourism to improve in the region, touristic routes were created, as well as supporting and providing various trainings to the hotels, local community and businesses. An electric vehicle charging station was built in the region by Eşarj, the electric charging network, to make the area a resting and recharging point for EV drivers.
Renewable energy was introduced to the businesses and various public institutions in the region with the purpose of initiating a green transformation with efficient and economical energy. Thus, the goal was to create the first green destination in Turkey. The goals of the project, which aims to contribute to 10 of the 17 SDGs, are as follows:
• Raise awareness on energy efficiency,
• Support social, environmental and economic transformation in sustainable tourism,
• Contribute to community-based socioeconomic development by raising awareness on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy resources,
• Establish a measurable and repeatable Sustainable Green Destination Model in Küçükköy, Ayvalık.
