May is recognized nationally as Mental Health Month (MHM). Many mental health
organizations, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), use this observance as an
opportunity to raise awareness of mental health conditions and the populations they affect. Led
by the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, the VA MHM 2023 campaign launched
on May 1, continued VA’s efforts to reshape public perceptions of mental health; build awareness
of mental health resources available to Veterans; and encourage Veterans, their supporters and
the general public to seek out mental health treatment when they need it.
This year, VA promoted mental health awareness through the Today I Am campaign. This
campaign inspired Veterans and their supporters by focusing on the sense of triumph Veterans
experience when they develop a better life or outlook after addressing their mental health
challenges. During this monthlong observance, the campaign website shared the stories of five
Veterans, encouraged site visitors to reflect on how mental health treatment could improve their
lives and educated them on the tools and resources available. A tailored user experience
encouraged users to explore and engage with featured Veteran stories, messaging and resources
that personally resonated.
