This concept was built on an amazing vintage lens; the Optex 4mm. An ultra-wide 16mm film camera lens which served as a portal to a Kubrick-esque room and music video for ‘Heartbreak Kid’.
Set in a spacious living room with a cinema camera positioned in the centre, we slowly and deliberately revolved around the room. The band moved through the room naturally, doing some things you would typically do in a living room and some other things that you might not. The movement and performance followed a precise choreography that was rehearsed thoroughly so we could capture in one take.
With each panoramic sweep, the lens reveals the band doing something new/different. As members enter and exit, we can navigate different combinations of members from solo through to the entire group.
The magic is in the minimalistic execution and nonchalant nature of the activity.
The Optex 4mm thrives on proximity, creating otherworldly perspectives with action in the foreground and we wanted to capitalise on this. We also used the entire space and played with all distances from the lens. It was such a pleasure collaborating with The Vaccines on the project!
