The 2023 Hsinchu City International Kite Festival is an exciting event that will take place in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, which is famously known as the "Windy City." This city boasts a unique geographic environment that makes it an ideal location for kite performances. The festival has broken away from the traditional framework of kite festivals and adopted the theme of "Sea Wishes to Come." This theme draws inspiration from the local maritime and fishing port elements, which are the core of the festival's design.
The event's overall design is based on three themes: "wind," "sea," and "technology." The organizers utilized Taiwan's only kite race course and the wind to launch a series of ocean kites, including a 30-meter-long whale kite, over 100 giant mollusc kites, string kites, stunt kites, and classic single-line plane kites. These kites created a beautiful underwater world in the sky. The organizers hope that the flying kites will bring joy and healing to the public, as kites have been known to bring blessings and healing.
The team also planned parent-child "fishing" experience activities, such as one-night dried fish DIY, fish topiary DIY, and fishery woodworking DIY, to promote education on fish-eating and the concept of protecting the sea. These activities echo the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of "SDG14 Marine Ecology," which aims to move towards the vision of sustainable oceans.
In addition, the traditional kite strings were equipped with lightweight LED lights and IC programs to create innovative "glow-in-the-dark kites." Each glow-in-the-dark kite will be programmed with a computer program to present different modes of performance, integrating fluid dynamics and technology, making it the biggest highlight of the event. Unlike traditional sky lanterns that are not environmentally friendly, dangerous fireworks, and expensive drones, the glow-in-the-dark kites provide people with a new option for environmentally friendly green activities.
The festival attracts international kite enthusiasts, nurtures local talent, and encourages people to disconnect from electronic devices and embrace a healthy lifestyle. The annual International Kite Festival creates job opportunities and boosts related industries, such as catering, accommodation, and transportation.
