The Department of Cultural Affairs, Taoyuan first adopted the theme of the Yi-Ge parade in 2014 as one of the highlights of the Taoyuan Minnan Cultural Festival, reviving the long-lost traditional culture. This year, forty teams, including local communities, associations, schools, and temples, joined the folklore floats parade and constructed a Minnan-style carnival unique to Taoyuan.
Yi-Ge: Storytelling & Moving Epic
Yi-Ge Parade in Taoyuan restores the traditional rickshaw performance as the core and lets the public understand the traditional Yi-Ge in a fun way, unlike other large-scale electric Yi-Ge. The theme of 2024 was a combination of local culture, nature, characteristic products, the Chinese zodiac, auspiciousness, and deities. At the same time, there were a series of ethnic themes throughout Taoyuan's development, ranging from Indigenous, Minnan, and Hakka, to new immigrants like Korean, Thai, and Indonesian imagery. These teams incorporated local stories and walked on the streets as if they were "moving epics", telling the history of Taoyuan development. Yi-Ge is more than a tradition; it is a piece of work that can tell a story, allowing more people to discover the beauty of cross-ethnic cultures.
Everyone is an Artist
The parade integrates the efforts of all the people in the team. The sense of fulfillment and enthusiasm makes the participants willing to continue to support this event, and also conveys the idea that "not only artists can create art". Even the general public can come up with unexpected designs if they utilize their creativity and imagination. In the cultural event, everyone became an artist, from the making of the art corners to the parade performance. Approximately 1,600 artists created the aesthetic exploration of Yi-Ge Parade.
In addition, two styles of 3D digital folk-art collections were introduced to attract more young people to participate in the festival for the first time, making the cultural event more fun through innovative technologies. Participants gave positive feedback on the event and felt that the event has improved year after year. The Minnan culture and the art of Yi-Ge in Taoyuan continue to be recognized internationally.
