"Fortune Dragon" draws its inspiration from the ancient myth of the Jiaolong—a dragon endowed with the power to summon clouds and rain—and incorporates the hydrological imagery of Taoyuan's "Village of a Thousand Ponds." The designer aimed to combine mechanical energy with traditional lantern craftsmanship to recreate the magnificent aura of a dragon soaring and swirling through the clouds.
Launched in the Year of the Snake, this theme not only resonates with the symbolism of the "little dragon" but also carries on the festive tradition of New Year blessings. Through the interplay of light and shadow and the infusion of artistic ingenuity, viewers can experience a perfect fusion of myth and local identity. At the same time, the installation conveys a belief in the protective power of mythical creatures, offering a cultural feast filled with Eastern blessings.
An ancient saying goes, “Accumulated earth forms a mountain, and storms arise; accumulated water forms a deep pool, and the jiaolong is born.” This proverb reveals the profound bond between the jiaolong and the elements of earth and water, echoing the core cultural spirit of this work.
The overall design is inspired by the auspicious 'Tian Shi' (heavenly timing) of the Year of the Snake, elegantly embodied by the nickname 'Little Dragon,' symbolizing the natural rhythm of the seasons. This concept is further enriched by the locale of Taoyuan, famously known as the 'Village of a Thousand Ponds,' which represents its favorable 'Di Li' (geographical advantages) and deep-rooted cultural heritage. The design utilizes translucent decorative fabrics paired with 3D dimensional painting to realistically render the intricate textures of dragon scales and water ripples, showcasing the refined beauty of the materials ('Cai Mei'). Finally, through the dynamic interplay of masterful craftsmanship and mechanical motion, the installation captures the life force of the jiaolong as it stirs the clouds and commands the rain, exemplifying the ultimate expression of 'Gong Qiao' (exquisite workmanship).
