At night, the Wanggong Fishing Port shimmers with scattered fishing lights—both a daily tool of fishermen and a vessel of cultural memory. The 2025 Wanggong Festival takes “Symphony of Light and Sea” as its theme, inspired by the century-old fishing village culture and the nocturnal scenery of fishing lights. The design team used light as a language, translating the imagery of maritime harvest into luminous installations. Inspired by the interplay of fishing lights, tides, and starry skies, the designers created a narrative corridor of light and shadow along the port promenade, inviting visitors to relive the warmth and romance of the port while continuing the village’s spiritual legacy.
The greatest feature of the lighting design lies in transforming the traditional point-like memory of fishing lights into linear and spatial experiences. At the entrance, the “Fishing Light Gateway” employs arched lighting to symbolize the departure point for voyages. “Light of the Oyster Shells” highlights oyster-shell structures with focused beams, producing a crystalline texture. The “Intertidal Light Zone” uses interactive sensors to mimic tidal rhythms, lighting up as visitors pass by. Along the port’s reflection zone, illuminated bands echo on the water, evoking the illusion of walking upon a river of light. The final “Sea of Wishing Lights” layers thousands of LED bulbs to create a star-filled landscape.
The overall lighting was carefully layered to avoid excessive glare, instead guiding visitors to feel the port’s rhythm between stillness and motion. By transforming light into a cultural symbol, the project established the most striking highlight of the festival.
