The SENTRUM (Sustainable Energy-Based Tourism Implementation Center) Project is an innovative destination transformation model that integrates energy efficiency with the principles of sustainable tourism through a holistic approach. Initiated in collaboration with Enerjisa Enerji, Sabancı University, and UNDP, the project pioneered a transformation in Ayvalık Küçükköy, focusing on delivering environmental, economic, and social benefits. With the launch of a new chapter in Birgi, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) also joined the project. By increasing the use of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, the project has supported the region’s development in line with sustainable tourism standards.
After a successful pilot in Küçükköy, Ayvalık, SENTRUM expanded to Birgi, Ödemiş—an ancient town rich in cultural and natural assets. Here, the project conducted energy audits, trained over 400 residents in topics ranging from behavioral finance to creative drama, and launched a new SENTRUM Application Center. This hub now hosts workshops, tech camps, and sustainability education for women, youth, and local entrepreneurs.
SENTRUM Birgi also introduced:
Renewable energy upgrades in public buildings
Sustainable tourism training for all local businesses
A Gender Equality Action Plan
Eco-friendly walking and cycling routes
Culinary workshops and a forthcoming “Birgi Sustainable Flavors” booklet
By aligning global sustainability standards with local needs, SENTRUM fosters year-round tourism, strengthens local economies, and promotes responsible travel. It directly contributes to SDGs 7, 8, and 12, while supporting broader goals like gender equality, climate action, and cultural preservation.
SENTRUM is more than a destination project—it’s a replicable model for inclusive, climate-conscious tourism. It inspires a future where communities thrive, heritage is honored, and sustainability is the norm.
