The Huang Juren Residence, located in the Yilan Park of Taiwan’s National Center for Traditional Arts, is both a historic landmark and a cultural stage. Built in 1877, it was the home of Huang Zuanxu—respectfully known as Huang Juren—the first person from Yilan to earn the juren title in the Qing dynasty. This residence is not only the county’s sole surviving juren home but also Yilan’s first relocated and preserved historic house.
Our project transforms this centuries-old residence into a living, immersive journey that allows modern visitors to step into the path of a scholar. Through carefully designed experiences, guests learn Chinese characters as students once did, take part in recreated imperial examinations, and witness the cultural life of Qing-era officials. Each stage blends storytelling, hands-on interaction, and traditional craftsmanship, turning the house into both a museum and a stage for lived heritage.
By curating an exhibition that bridges education, history, and community, we honor the legacy of Huang Juren while presenting his story in a way that resonates with today’s audiences. The project is not simply about preserving walls—it preserves values of learning, perseverance, and civic duty, inspiring new generations to see culture as a living force.
