The Fortress of Knin, Croatia, one of the largest fortification systems in Europe, has played a vital role in the military strategies of ruling powers for centuries. Its military structures, originating from various historical periods, stand as witnesses to its turbulent history and the shifts in governance. Among these is one of the barracks, which has been reconstructed to serve a new interpretive function. This building now hosts a permanent exhibition, designed with a contemporary museological approach, showcasing the history of the Fortress of Knin and its significance to the local community.
The permanent exhibition invites visitors to explore the history of the Fortress of Knin, focusing on medieval and early modern events that have significantly influenced its current appearance. The exhibition provides a historical context preceding the fortress's formation, examines its evolution and strategic importance from the first mention of Knin in the 10th century to the early 19th century, and focuses on the individuals who once served as its guards, bringing to life their personal stories. The final section bridges past and present, highlighting the contemporary relevance of the fortress through testimonies and archives that showcase its significance to the local community.
The interpretation center also offers an array of innovative interpretive media. An archaeological playroom engages children, while cutting-edge technology like VR headsets allows visitors to experience a hot air balloon flight over the fortress. Mixed reality glasses bring historical scenes and figures to life within the exterior spaces. Additionally, the casemates host contemporary art installations that further illuminate the site's rich history.
The Knin Museum manages the interpretation center, which is situated within the authentic site of the fortress. This exhibition enables visitors to explore the fortress’s multifaceted history and its enduring importance as a cultural and historical landmark. It reflects the fortress’s complex and tumultuous history, revealing traces of those who lived and worked within its walls centuries before us.
