Kazuo, a Japanese-American rap and hip-hop artist, was looking to evolve his visual direction toward something more conceptual and narrative-driven. His previous videos leaned into performance-based visuals, but for his single Sunny in Hell, he wanted to explore a more stylized and story-centered approach. The challenge was to create a visual identity for the video that reflected the song’s themes of rebellion, identity, and the antihero journey, while standing apart from his earlier work.
I worked with Kazuo from concept to execution, serving as the creative director for the project. We crafted a video narrative inspired by our shared love of video games, using that influence to represent different "eras" of Kazuo’s artistic identity. The storyline embraced shock value and antihero tropes, opening with a dramatic twist where Kazuo murders his manager to set the tone. This bold creative direction positioned the video as a fresh and fearless step forward in his visual journey.
The process began with deep creative discussions around the song’s themes and the types of characters and stories that shaped our childhoods. These conversations helped us design a visual framework rooted in nostalgia, chaos, and transformation. I developed a detailed moodboard and visual reference system that drew from video game cinematics, anime themes, and fashion aesthetics.
On set, I directed the creative execution, guiding the tone, shot composition, and performance direction. In post-production, I integrated motion graphics to heighten key moments, using visual effects to accentuate the energy and surreal nature of the narrative. Each creative decision was made to reflect Kazuo’s evolution as an artist and to leave a strong impression on viewers through both style and substance.
