As the opioid crisis continues to challenge healthcare systems, traditional lecture-based training videos are no longer sufficient to prepare clinicians to implement broader evidence-based treatments and patient-centered care. Health care providers need to practice the nuanced, high-stakes conversations and approaches required when treating patients with substance use disorders.
Xpan partnered with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry to reconceptualize their MOUD (Medications for Opioid Use Disorder) training program, transforming 22 subject matter expert lecture-style videos that previously reached over 600,000 users into eight immersive, holistic learning experiences. The objective was not simply to modernize the content, but to create a format that would shift from passive viewers to active participants in realistic clinical scenarios and updated practices.
The updated program features shorter expert videos alongside 3D animated videos that simulate authentic clinical environments and model both clinician-to-clinician and clinician-to-patient dialogues, allowing learners to witness complex conversations about treatments, stigma, and recovery. Generated patient scenarios were carefully co-designed to reflect realistic, demographically diverse patient profiles while maintaining clinical accuracy. Learners interact with patients in scenarios, proposing treatments, and reflecting on approaches in a safe setting.
Maintaining credibility and certifying competence with a highly trained professional audience was essential and included up-to-date, linked resources, and the client's ability to use the slides for future updates. Visual design elements and structure were intentionally crafted to convey a sense of professional polish using modern e-learning techniques without straying too far from what the learning audience is accustomed to. Images were selected or created to support a sensitive subject matter and the reality faced by individuals living with substance use disorders, while avoiding stigma, oversimplification, and being too graphic.
By adding interactive, immersive clinical storytelling, the program elevates how providers engage with complex and sensitive treatment education. The result is a learning experience that blends peer expertise with realistic clinical simulation, helping them move beyond simply absorbing information to envision how they will apply it in practice.
In addressing one of today’s most urgent public health challenges, the program demonstrates how thoughtful design and innovative storytelling can transform professional education into meaningful behavioral change.
