About The Entry
Marketing for saltwater fishing often presented an idealized version of the sport. Most brands showed bright skies, calm water, and smiling faces. Fishing appeared as leisure, framed through blue-sky days, trophy shots, and effortless success. This presentation flattened the lived reality of serious offshore anglers, whose relationship with the water is defined by endurance, risk, and long stretches without reward.
Raymarine, a global leader in marine electronics, entered this moment as a heritage brand that had slipped to a distant third in market share behind larger competitors, despite deep credibility built through decades of reliability and trust from institutions such as the U.S. Coast Guard. The brand identified an opportunity to regain momentum with committed saltwater anglers who fish frequently, push limits, and measure legitimacy through experience rather than image.
“Earn Your Strikes” reframed Raymarine as a badge of honor, rejecting the genre’s polish and replacing it with grit—sea spray, gray skies, hooks through hands, and the defiance that keeps a boat steady through chaos. The :60 manifesto film set the tone with raw energy and blunt storytelling. In this world, respect accrues through exposure to risk and the refusal to turn back when conditions deteriorate.
Research involving 350 boat-owning anglers revealed a divide between “fair-weather” fishermen and the “fully committed.” These experiences of perseverance and hardship function as a badge of honor that separates them from the casual crowd. We pivoted to an emotional positioning: Raymarine is built for the reality of the committed.
We built a multi-channel platform that spoke to both consumers and resellers. The integrated rollout included a :30, two :15s, one :60, digital banners, social films, print, and email, along with a storm-lashed trade show booth at ICAST. Conversions rose 42% from April through peak months, while CPC dropped 23%. New audience acquisition strengthened significantly, with the new-visitor ratio climbing to 22%. The campaign reintroduced Raymarine as the gear built for the storm.
