The Warming Hull

Designed in response to Iceland's extreme climate and magnificent landscapes, this sauna pavilion draws deep inspiration from
the county's rich Viking seafaring history. The architectural form employs a strategy of metaphor and contrast: the main volume is a minimalist rectangular box clad in dark gray charred timber, offering a raw, deep texture that seamlessly integrates into the cold, stark volcanic wideness, while the roof line adopts the streamlined curvature of a Viking long-ship, resembling an upturned ancient wooden vessel. Within this compact footprint, the layout efficiently organizes a sauna, changing rooms, and restrooms.The spatial experience follows a ritualistic transition from cold to warm, and from open to serene. While the dark gray exterior shields against the biting arctic cold, the warm wooden core envelops travelers inside, allowing the lingering warmth of history to endure in the timeless dialogue between fire and ice.
