About The Entry
Square sells an integrated commerce platform to business owners, an audience that has seen every
testimonial-and-demo film the category makes. To prove the platform to them, Square and Vidico
went to Suupaa, a Japanese konbini reimagined for Melbourne, where dine-in, takeaway, retail,
online ordering and loyalty all run through Square.
The result is a pair of documentary films conceived as complementary portraits of one modern
hospitality business.
"An Ode to Konbini" (3:34) looks outward from the seller, opening in a rush of
neon, kanji and price tags before slowing into the people, food culture, suppliers and creative
philosophy that give Suupaa its identity. Its companion film (4:06) follows the invisible operational
systems that let that identity function at scale.
The films mix observational documentary, editorial
food cinematography, macro detail, handheld coverage, archival textures and real product
interactions.
The edit moves the way the venue does, negative space in morning prep and burst
cutting through the lunch rush, and the sound design treats the beep of a Square reader as one more
kitchen sound, no more or less important than a fridge door.
Much of the footage was caught inside
a trading venue during live service; staff kept cooking, customers kept eating, and the pressure on
screen is real. Nothing pauses to explain Square. The platform is revealed through accumulated
behaviour: orders taken, payments processed, staff coordinated, business performance understood.
Audiences stayed. Across YouTube and Meta the campaign delivered 2.99 million impressions and
more than a million completed views. The long-form films held 38.6% of YouTube viewers to the
final frame at $0.04 per completed view, while the Meta cutdowns drove 12,831 clicks at 0.92% CTR.
A payments platform was watched to the end more than a million times by playing the role it plays
at Suupaa: quiet infrastructure that lets an independent business remain distinctly itself.
