About The Entry

Google I/O is the tech company's largest owned event and the world's biggest developer conference. Rather than send an invitation, Google challenges its global developer community to unlock the event date through interactive challenges. Enough collective progress reveals the date.
For 2025, we asked how to turn a date reveal into something bigger. Our answer: an interactive, quantum-inspired puzzle adventure. We launched Prism Shift, a web-based game where players solve seven light-based "worlds" to reveal the date. Thousands of developers earned the date one beam at a time instead of reading a marketing email.
The Build
Prism Shift runs on quantum logic: prisms and mirrors bend light the way a quantum computer bends qubits. Players reflect, split, and steer beams across seven worlds to illuminate hidden beacons. Mechanics compound as they go — prisms split light into RGB, filters transform wavelengths, lanterns light dark sections, entangled pieces trigger chain reactions. Every level allows multiple solutions, rewarding creative problem-solving.
The Gemini-powered side quest system set the experience apart. Rather than bolt AI on, we embedded it in gameplay. As each level loads, Gemini places a secret tile on the board and generates a unique riddle to find it. Solve the riddle, reveal the tile, unlock bonus worlds shaped like Chrome Dino, Android, and other Google icons. We built the prompts in Google AI Studio, giving Gemini creative freedom while keeping every riddle fair, relevant, and unique to each player.
The Results
Prism Shift redefined what an event announcement can be, proving routine communications can become memorable, shareable experiences when built with craft.
12+ hours of playable content, unprecedented depth for an event teaser
7 distinct worlds with unique mechanics, color schemes, and challenges
Record-breaking engagement for the second consecutive year
Android Police ranked Prism Shift #1 among all Google I/O puzzles ever created, calling it "a banger" and "technically the most complex teaser so far." The reviewer noted: "It's also among the most difficult, and as someone who loves a good brain scratcher, I can't put it down."
