About The Entry
"The Paper Bride is an immersive horror theatre experience set in Singapore in the early 1900s. Within a Peranakan household, audiences encounter a family preparing for a wedding that conceals a sinister purpose. What begins as an invitation to witness a wedding ceremony becomes an investigation into family secrets, ancestral demands and a young bride’s fate as a sacrificial offering.
The experience blends live theatre, interactive storytelling and virtual reality, placing audiences inside the unfolding drama. Rather than watching from a distance, audiences investigate the wedding through the environment as well as conversations with characters to piece together the circumstances surrounding the bride’s impending marriage. As audiences learn more about the family, they must consider whom to trust, what has been concealed and how to respond before the ceremony proceeds. Encounters with ancestral figures gradually reveal the forces behind the wedding, drawing participants deeper into the conflict between family loyalty and personal survival.
The Paper Bride offers a glimpse into the history of ghost weddings and the ancestral beliefs surrounding marriage beyond death.
The live performance leads audiences into a virtual reality experience, where they must solve puzzles to stop the wedding procession and prevent the bride from crossing into the afterlife. This sequence gives audiences a direct role in the rescue, turning their investigation into action. Beyond the show itself, virtual production was used to create the teaser trailer and pre-show instructional video, establishing the story’s setting and explaining how audiences can participate.
Across the live and virtual segments, audiences investigate the wedding through conversations with characters and clues they discover along the way. What they uncover informs their decisions about whom to trust and how to help the bride, with their actions shaping how the story unfolds."
